General vehicle safety, European Commission to announce new rules for automated vehicles this summer

The European Commission announced on Wednesday 6 July that it will adopt new technical rules on the safety of automated and connected cars this summer. “This will take place in early September at the latest” a diplomatic source told EUROPE.

These new rules, which will be established by means of a delegated act and an implementing act, will be part of the regulation on general vehicle safety (see EUROPE 12366/29), which is effective as of Wednesday 6 July.

They will focus on automated vehicles that replace the driver on the motorway and on driverless vehicles, such as city shuttles or robot taxis.

In particular, these rules should define the notions of limits on the maximum number of vehicles and models on the roads. “There will then be a review, the aim being to arrive, in the long term, at an unlimited volume”, the same source explained.

As a reminder, since 6 July, the regulation on general vehicle safety provides for the introduction of new safety devices for intelligent speed assistance, reversing detection by camera or sensors or a loss-of-attention warning in the event of driver drowsiness or distraction. Additional measures are provided for vans, buses and trucks.
