On Wednesday 6 July the European Parliament called on Member States to take strong measures to promote the social economy as a “driver for quality employment, social inclusion and an inclusive digital and green transition”.
Adopting the report by Jordi Cañas (Renew Europe, Spain) by 493 votes to 75 with 69 abstentions, it made its recommendations on the EU action plan for the social economy (see EUROPE 12850/15), the potential of which remains largely untapped, the rapporteur explained the day before.
To facilitate development of the social economy, its legal and policy frameworks must be strengthened, says the European Parliament, welcoming the European Commission’s commitment to propose an EU Council recommendation on the development of framework conditions for the social economy in 2023, which will propose a uniform definition of the social economy.
The European Parliament also recalls its wish to establish a statute for non-profit European cross-border associations and organisations and to see the creation of financial instruments dedicated to the social economy. The mutual sector, especially in the field of health care, should be particularly supported, the European Parliament also says.
No amendments were tabled for the plenary vote.
