06/07/22 (Agence Europe) – “The Commission will present in two weeks a contingency plan based on national emergency plans in case of disruption or full cut-off of Russian gas”, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday 6 July, confirming her announcement made at the end of the last European Council meeting (see EUROPE 12979/1). The plan, due on 20 July, will coordinate the actions of Member States in the event of an emergency to ensure that “gas is delivered where it is most needed”. With 12 Member States currently affected by partial or total cuts in Russian gas supplies, Ms von der Leyen called on the Czech Presidency of the EU Council to swiftly adopt the REPowerEU plan to move the Union away from dependence on Russian fossil fuels and to start negotiations with the European Parliament (‘trilogues’) on the ‘Fit for 55’ package.
