EU supports humanitarian partners in Moldova to speed up emergency assistance for migrants

In an operation that will facilitate the work of humanitarian organisations on the ground, the EU is stepping up its humanitarian aid to Moldova, one of the countries most directly affected by the influx of refugees fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The European Commission announced on Tuesday 12 April that it had set up a warehouse in Chisinau to support humanitarian partners and enable the delivery of more than 1,200 EU-owned tents and 4,000 blankets for people displaced by the conflict.

This delivery will reach Moldova this week on three flights of the EU humanitarian airlift. The warehouse and the deployment of humanitarian supplies are 100% funded by the EU.

For this operation, the Commission has made use of the European Humanitarian Response Capacity (EHRC) - an operational instrument that enables it to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid where the humanitarian community struggles to provide support in the event of a sudden-onset disaster.

In addition to EU funding for humanitarian partners on the ground, we are also enabling them with concrete operational support. Through the mobilisation of the European Humanitarian Response Capacity and its operation in Moldova, the EU reaffirms its support also to those countries hosting refugees who are fleeing from the horrors of this conflict”, comments Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič in a statement.

€8 million in humanitarian aid has been made available for Moldova to provide emergency assistance at border crossings and transit points, to ensure basic living conditions in shelters and to provide multi-purpose financial assistance to vulnerable IDPs to cover their basic needs in Moldova.

This is in addition to the in-kind support already provided by 18 Member States and Norway through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism in response to a request for assistance from the country (see EUROPE 12911/7). The Commission also helped to deliver medical equipment from the RescEU reserve. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
