The European Commission proposed on Tuesday 12 April to reduce the amount of the contribution of EU countries by €3.2 billion in 2022.
Indeed, the European Commission adopted Draft Amending Budget No. 2 for 2022 which aims to enter in the 2022 EU budget the surplus resulting from the implementation of the 2021 budget year.
The implementation of the 2021 budget resulted in a surplus of €3.2 billion, which is therefore entered as revenue in the 2022 budget (surplus revenue: €2.57 billion and surplus expenditure: €652.3 million).
Budgeting the 2021 surplus will reduce the total contribution of Member States to the financing of the 2022 EU budget.
Member States’ contributions will also be influenced by the revised own resources forecasts, which will be available after the meeting of the Advisory Committee on Own Resources in May 2022.
The budget surplus for 2020 was €1.768 billion.
