21/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – The EU Council decided, on Monday 21 February, to add five members of the Makhlouf family to the list of persons and entities subject to EU targeted restrictive measures due to the situation in Syria. They are the two wives and three daughters of Mohammed Makhlouf, who died in September 2020. Mr Makhlouf - sanctioned by the EU in August 2011 - was a businessman closely associated with the Assad family. According to the EU Council, there is a risk that the assets inherited by his family members “will be used to support the activities of the Syrian regime, and will flow directly into the regime’s possession, potentially contributing to the regime’s violent repression of the civilian population”. With today’s decision, 292 individuals and 70 entities are sanctioned because of the situation in Syria. See the legal act: https://aeur.eu/f/f7 (CG)
