21/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Agriculture, Janusz Wojciechowski, suggested on Monday 21 February “the creation of a European think tank on pigmeat” to the Ministers of Agriculture of the European Union countries, who discussed the market situation. It provides for meetings between national ministries and supply chain actors. The issues to be addressed in the think tank would be the sector’s “grossly excessive” dependence on exports to “unstable” third country markets, and the sector’s dependence on massive imports of soya and maize. The Commission refuses to activate market measures on the grounds that they would have to be financed from the agricultural crisis reserve [of €497.3 million], which is financed by farmers (see EUROPE 12883/6).
