Brussels, 15/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Commission announced on Wednesday 15 December that the day before, it had registered a European Citizens’ Initiative (‘The Green VAT’, which aims to introduce a ‘green VAT’ to stimulate sustainable products and services) and is calling for a legislative act to do so. The organisers of the initiative now have six months to collect signatures (1 million statements of support from seven Member States). Furthermore, the institution announced that it had rejected an initiative calling for the introduction of a new fundamental right for direct democracy in European institutions. The European Commission noted that the European Citizens’ Initiative Regulation only allows for action within the limits of the EU Treaties.
