15/12/2021 (Agence Europe) – MEPs, on Wednesday 15 December, called for policies to advance the reduction and elimination of all nuclear arsenals and to create the conditions for a world free of nuclear, chemical, biological or radiological weapons. In the report by Sven Mikser (S&D, Estonia), which they adopted (536 votes in favour, 128 against and 31 abstentions), MEPs are concerned that the withdrawal of key arms control treaties, or the lack of them, would seriously undermine international arms control regimes. The Parliament further stresses that the EU should ensure a “strong and constructive” role in global rules-based non-proliferation efforts, and that further efforts are needed to strengthen its preparedness and action against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats.
