In conclusions on Monday 15 November, the Council of the EU stressed the need for the full implementation and universalisation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
In the run-up to the 10th Review Conference of the Parties to the NPT, to be held in New York from 4 to 28 January 2022, the EU Council called on all States that have not yet done so to accede to the Treaty as non-nuclear-weapon states and, pending their accession, to comply with its provisions.
The EU Council also announced, in other conclusions, financial support from the EU in the amount of €1.6 million over two years for the strengthening, implementation and universalisation of the Convention on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Certain Conventional Weapons Which May Be Deemed to Be Excessively Injurious or to Have Indiscriminate Effects (CCW).
It stressed the importance of promoting the universalisation of the CCW Convention and its protocols.
According to the EU Council, the 6th Review Conference - which will be held in Geneva, from 13 to 17 December - will be an opportunity to strengthen the implementation of the Convention, to ensure that it remains adapted to new developments and to guarantee its financial and organisational soundness.
