EU ministers outline their priorities in 2022 quota negotiations with UK

On Monday 15 November, EU Fisheries Ministers reiterated their respective priorities in the ongoing negotiations with the UK on Total Allowable Catches (TACs) and 2022 quotas for stocks under shared management.

The European Commission has provided information on the progress of the annual consultations with the UK on fishing quotas for 2022. The Council’s role is to give guidance to the Commission, which is conducting consultations with the UK, and ultimately to approve the proposal on fishing quotas before the formal end of the consultations.

France recalled the sensitivity of the issue of fishing licences in British waters and the need for the EU to assert its rights (see EUROPE 12831/14). The French government believes that the UK is not respecting the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the parties, as the UK is refusing, at this stage, to grant a sufficient number of fishing licences to French vessels.
