On Monday 15 November, European Foreign Ministers expressed their deep concern about the continuing deterioration of the situation in Sudan since the military coup of 25 October, as evidenced by the violent crackdown on peaceful demonstrations that took place last weekend.
“With reference to the joint statement of the Troika, EU and Switzerland last Friday, the EU condemns in the strongest terms the violence perpetrated against peaceful civilian protestors on Saturday 13 November”, said the spokesperson for the European External Action Service on Sunday evening.
On Friday, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, had already called, on behalf of the EU, for the immediate release of all those detained since 25 October and for the lifting of the house arrest of Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok (see EUROPE 12831/4).
“We will hold authorities accountable for violations of human rights and lack of protection of civilians, which has been induced since the end of the democratic transitional process”, the EEAS spokesperson’s statement continued.
The EU calls on the military to return to a fair and open dialogue with civilians, as it did in August 2019.
Noting that the interventions of the military since the coup are “undoing much of the progress achieved under the civilian-led government”, the statement noted that “this will have serious consequences for the support of the European Union”. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
