15/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – A coalition of 129 civil society organisations sent an open letter, on Monday 15 November, to the German Finance Minister and potential future Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, asking him to take a clear stance against the inclusion of nuclear power and fossil gas in the European Union’s taxonomy, a system for classifying “sustainable” economic activities. In their view, nuclear energy is “unsustainable” due to “severe safety risks, environmental pollution and the unsolved waste problem”. The same applies to fossil gas, which “emits large quantities of climate-damaging greenhouse gases, especially methane, along its extraction and transport chain”, the letter says. The delegated act on the inclusion of nuclear and fossil gas in the taxonomy is expected before the end of the year. See the letter: https://bit.ly/3CtujWh (DG)
