15/11/2021 (Agence Europe) – Brazil requested consultations with the EU at the World Trade Organization (WTO) on 11 November. It believes that the salmonella safety criteria applied by the EU to poultry meat from Brazil are not compatible with the WTO Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures or the 1994 General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Brazil points out that the EU applies different rules for fresh poultry meat and poultry meat preparations. The criteria are stricter for the second category. According to the Brazilian authorities, this difference has “adversely affected Brazilian exports of poultry meat preparations to the EU”. This request for consultations is the starting point for a WTO dispute settlement procedure. (LM)
