21/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) and the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) joined forces on Monday 21 June to call for a ban on facial recognition in public spaces. This announcement comes as the European Commission proposed, in April, rules on artificial intelligence allowing the use of this technology in certain areas such as migration or law enforcement (see EUROPE 12703/3). “We call for a general ban on any use of artificial intelligence for automated recognition of human features in publicly accessible spaces, such as recognition of faces, gait, fingerprints, DNA, voice, keystrokes and other biometric or behavioural signals”, the two bodies said in a joint statement.
