On Monday 21 June, the Council of the EU adopted sanctions against seven military personnel and one civilian, three companies, and the War Veteran’s Organisation, for their responsibilities in the 1 February 2021 coup in Myanmar and the subsequent crackdown.
Those sanctioned are the Minister of the Interior, the Minister of Borders, the Minister of Planning, Finance and Industry, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection (MONREC) and the Minister of Transport and Communication. The Deputy Minister of Defence, the Deputy Minister of Information and the Attorney General of the Union of Myanmar are also subject to restrictive measures.
The EU Council considers them responsible for undermining democracy and the Rule of law and for serious human rights violations in the country.

These companies are either State-owned or controlled by the armed forces (Tatmadaw) and contribute directly or indirectly to the military’s revenue or activities, according to the EU Council.
