21/06/2021 (Agence Europe) – The Austrian government has forwarded to its counterparts a ‘non-paper’ on the European Commission’s recent strategy for voluntary return and reintegration of migrants (see EUROPE 12707/11). In it, Vienna talks about the specific role of Frontex and calls for the EU agency to set up an administrative unit that fully funds and coordinates reintegration assistance measures in order to reduce the administrative and financial pressure on Member States. Vienna is concerned about Frontex’s planned takeover of ERRIN (the European Return and Reintegration Network, an initiative involving 15 EU Member States and Schengen-associated countries) in 2022 and calls for uninterrupted continuation of its activities. Vienna also insists on the creation of a new financial structure to take charge of reintegration assistance and real financial incentives, entrusted to Frontex, to encourage voluntary returns.
