16/04/2021 (Agence Europe) – Chinese President Xi Jinping has lashed out at the future Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) during his telephone meeting with Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron held on Friday 16 April. The three heads of state discussed climate and health issues. According to the Chinese President, the response to climate change “should not be a pretext for erecting barriers to trade”. The European Commission plans to publish its legislative proposal for a WTO-compatible CBAM in June 2021. Xi Jinping has called on developed economies to “lead by example on reducing emissions”. He has not yet confirmed whether he will attend the virtual climate summit on 22 and 23 April led by US President Joe Biden. (LM)
