European Commission proposes to return 2020 surplus of €1.76 billion to Member States

On Thursday 15 April, the European Commission adopted a Draft Amending Budget No. 3/2021, which aims to enter the 2020 budget surplus in the 2021 budget.

The implementation for financial year 2020 shows a surplus of €1.76 billion, which will therefore be entered as revenue in the 2021 budget: surplus revenue of €1.6 billion (including €1 billion in surpluses, balances and adjustments) and €121.3 million in expenditure.

Budgeting the surplus will reduce the total contribution of the 27 EU Member States to the financing of the 2021 budget. The Council of the EU and the European Parliament have to adopt this amending budget noº 3/2021.

The EU budget surplus for 2019 was €3.2 billion.
