Eurospace Secretary General, Olivier Lemaitre, emphasised the importance of developing a European legal framework for Space Traffic Management (STM) during an exchange held on Thursday 15 April with MEPs from the ‘Sky & Space’ Intergroup.
Welcoming the European Commission’s recent announcements of European action in the space traffic management sector (see EUROPE 12658/3) –a key action to ensure the EU’s autonomy in space – the Secretary General highlighted the importance of coordinating Member States in terms of regulations and standardisation.
He therefore encouraged the development of a legal framework in relation to the European space industry. In this respect, he emphasised the importance of collaborating with the European Cooperation for Space Standardization (ECSS).
He also believes it is important: - to create the conditions for a European internal market for space situational awareness; - to set up and support the establishment of funded programme lines to further develop European STM capabilities; - to promote a strong industrial involvement in the EU SST consortium.
