EU RESPONSE TO COVID-19 / Health

European Parliament ready to approve fast-track process for authorising modified Covid-19 vaccines

On Friday 16 April, the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) backed the European Commission’s proposal to fast-track regulatory approval of adapted vaccines against Covid-19 variants.

The proposal in question – a delegated regulation – will aim, in other words, to save time, if already authorised Covid-19 vaccines are modified in the future to be more effective against the variants and are then approved in their new form.

After discussing the issue on Thursday in the presence of a representative of the European Commission (see EUROPE 12699/8), the ENVI Committee members recommended (by 76 votes in favour, 3 against and 1 abstention) to give an early green light to the proposed delegated regulation as it stands.

The Parliament as a whole should therefore give its support to the text during the plenary session which will start in a few days time on 26 April.
