04/11/2020 (Agence Europe) – The European Commissioner for Internal Market, Thierry Breton, explained on Wednesday 4 November that he was working on a renewed cyber security strategy for Europe, which he called “a European cyber shield”. The strategy is expected to be presented in December, potentially on the 15th of the month. Noting the cyber attacks on hospitals in Finland at the end of October, the Commissioner said that the EU should equip itself with “cyber capacity to be able to detect, react and deter”. “This will be the subject of the cyber plan I’m working on for the end of the year”, he promised at the ‘Conference on the Future of Europe: what are the European defence goals?’ event. From 7 July to 2 October, the Commission organised a public consultation on revising the Directive on security of network and information systems (the NIS Directive) (see EUROPE 12522/12). (CG)
