04/11/2020 (Agence Europe) – The President of the Republic of Cyprus, Níkos Anastasiádis, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar (see EUROPE 12585/23), met for the first time as leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities on Tuesday 3 November at the residence of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar. “Mr Tatar and Mr Anastasiádis expressed their determination to respond positively to the UN Secretary-General’s commitment to explore the possibility of convening an informal meeting in Format 5 (the two Cypriot communities, Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom) + UN, in a favourable climate, at an appropriate stage”, the UN said in a statement. In front of the media, Mr Anastasiádis explained that he had raised the issue of Varosha during the meeting and that Mr. Tatar had highlighted hydrocarbons. (CG)
