04/11/2020 (Agence Europe) – The EU Council formally approved on Wednesday 4 November the political agreement reached with Parliament on Class actions (see EUROPE 12517/15). The future Directive requires Member States to set up a system of representative actions to protect the collective interests of consumers in the event of infringements of EU law. It provides for both cessation and reparation measures. On Parliament’s side, the text has already been validated by the Committee on Legal Affairs and must now be validated by the whole House by the end of the year. Once this step has been completed, Member States will have 24 months to transpose the Directive into national law and a further 6 months to start applying these provisions.
