EU denounces continued exploration activities in Eastern Mediterranean

The spokesperson for the European External Action Service denounced, on Wednesday 4 November, the publication of a new Navtex (maritime information system) by Turkey and the continued conduct of its seismic survey activities.

Turkey issued a new Navtex on Tuesday 3 November for an area in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) up until 16 February.

According to the EEAS spokesperson, these prospecting activities, which affect the Greek and Cypriot maritime areas, “are deeply regrettable, especially in view of ongoing constructive attempts at all levels to create space for dialogue”.

This is yet another course of action that, unfortunately, continues to create more tensions and distrust in the region instead of contributing to lasting solutions”, the spokesperson said in a statement.

The spokesperson recalled that dialogue “in good faith” and abstaining from unilateral actions were crucial elements for reaching a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean and developing a cooperative and mutually beneficial relationship between the EU and Turkey. “Differences need to be discussed and sorted at the negotiating table”, the spokesperson said.

In addition, the ambassadors of the Member States to the EU made a political agreement on Wednesday 4 November to extend the sanctions regime concerning the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, which runs until 11 November 2020, for another year (see EUROPE 12367/8). This extension is expected be formally adopted through a written procedure which will end on Friday 6 November.

Currently, two persons are sanctioned under this regime for their involvement in illegal drilling activities (see EUROPE 12435/4). (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
