The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published on Tuesday 3 November an assessment on the welfare of cattle during the different stages of slaughter.
EU experts analysed the conditions of arrival, stunning and bleeding of the animals. They identified 40 animal welfare hazards, mainly during stunning and bleeding.
Thirty-nine of these risks are related to a lack of training or fatigue of the personnel responsible for slaughter.
This analysis was requested by the European Commission to feed into the reflections for the revision of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) The EFSA opinion also proposes preventive and corrective measures.
EFSA has already published opinions on various farm animal welfare topics: measures to address welfare concerns of pigs at slaughter, problems with caged rabbits, welfare of poultry at slaughter.
