Eighteen businesses and organisations launch European Clean Trucking Alliance

On Wednesday 15 July, eighteen European companies and organisations launched the European Clean Trucking Alliance (ECTA), a coalition that is calling for the decarbonisation of road freight in the EU.

Road freight transport companies and EU civil society associations and organisations are urging the EU to accelerate the transition to zero-emissions trucks.

For the first time, in 2019, the EU set targets for 2025 and 2030 for reducing CO2 emissions from the European fleet of new heavy-duty vehicles (see EUROPE 12274/28).

The Alliance is urging the EU to take further action and “present a clear political path and strategy to enable the deployment of zero-emissions vehicles and infrastructure”.

It calls on the European Commission to make the transition to zero-emissions trucks a priority in order to meet the ambitious targets of the proposed EU Climate Law by 2030 and achieve a carbon-neutral Europe by 2050.

As EU Member States consider stimulus investments in response to the Covid-19 crisis, ECTA urges them to “protect jobs and support long-term sustainable solutions that will decarbonise the road freight sector”.

In a joint statement, Andreas Scheuer, the German Federal Minister of Transport and Digital Infrastructure, Frans Timmermans, the Commission Executive Vice-President, Stientje van Veldhoven, the Dutch Minister of the Environment and Chair of the Transport Decarbonisation Alliance, and Pascal Canfin, Chair of the European Parliament Committee on the Environment Public Health and Food Safety, welcomed the initiative.

The members of ECTA are: Anheuser-Busch InBev, Contargo, Deutsche Post, DHL Group, FM Logistics, GEODIS, Girteka Logistics, Inter IKEA Systems B.V. Meyer & Meyer, Michelin, Nestlé, No Limit Logistics, Nordic Logistics Association, Polis Network, Transport and Logistics Netherlands, Transport & Environment (T&E), Unilever, Van der Wal, and Vos Logistics. The World Economic Forum is among their supporters. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
