15/07/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 14 July, the European Commission adopted a proposal opening and providing for the management of autonomous EU tariff quotas for certain fishery products for the period 2021-2023. EU fisheries and aquaculture production covers only 43% of its needs. These measures are designed to allow the fish processing sector in the EU to import raw materials from non-Member States at reduced rates or duty-free. The proposal is based on the assumption that, at the end of the transitional period, a free trade agreement between the EU and the United Kingdom will be concluded so as to preserve trade flows between EU Member States and the United Kingdom without imposing import duties. In the absence of a trade agreement at the end of the Brexit transition period, the EU Council may amend the Regulation. (LC)
