Member States invite ECDC to comment on mass screening

13/07/2020 (Agence Europe)Member States have sought the opinion of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on mass screening in the context of Covid-19, according to a report of a meeting of the Health Security Committee (HSC) published on 9 July. The document suggests that at this stage the EU agency does not support mass screening, given the lack of evidence to demonstrate its effectiveness. Indeed, in its latest risk assessment, the ECDC recommends instead a “strengthened but targeted” screening approach, focusing on “active surveillance and early detection of all symptomatic cases (see EUROPE 12519/2). However, the HSC minutes indicate that the ECDC will organise a virtual meeting on this subject, where Member States will be able to share their experience, and that it will eventually provide formal scientific advice. Link: https://bit.ly/2ZnslpL  (SPj)
