European Parliament adopts resolution to strengthen action on chemicals and sustainability

13/07/2020 (Agence Europe)Two days after a debate with Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevičius (see EUROPE 12524/14), the European Parliament adopted by a very large majority (653 votes in favour, 17 against and 11 abstentions), on Friday 10 July, a resolution calling on the European Commission to present a new chemical substances strategy that ensures a high level of protection for human and animal health and for the environment (see EUROPE 12517/13). The text insists on respect for the precautionary principle and the polluter pays principle, while advocating that animal testing be reduced to a minimum. MEPs also call for a comprehensive EU framework on endocrine disrupters and support the principle of ‘one substance - one risk assessment’ whereby substances are reviewed by a single EU agency. The European Commission’s future chemicals strategy for sustainability is expected to be presented in the third quarter of this year. See the resolution: https://bit.ly/3j1mHRY (DG)
