13/07/2020 (Agence Europe) – The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated the current Polish President Andrzej Duda, a member of the ruling PiS party, on her Twitter account on Monday 13 July, after he was re-elected on Sunday 12 July as the head of the country in a close second round. She said she looked forward to “working” with him “on the many challenges that Europe and Poland face together”. According to the Electoral Commission, as quoted by AFP, the outgoing president reportedly obtained 51.21% of the votes against 48.79% for his rival, Rafał Trzaskowski, mayor of Warsaw and a member of Civic Platform, Donald Tusk’s party. The voter turnout was over 68%. Since the end of 2017, Poland has been involved in what is referred to as an Article 7 procedure concerning the violation of the EU’s fundamental values. (SP)
