Eighty-four millionaires call for tax increase on very wealthiest to help pay for global economic recovery

A group of 84 millionaires, the “Millionaires for Humanity”, called on governments around the world on Monday 13 July to use their vast fortunes to finance the post-Covid-19 economic recovery and help rebalance the global economy.

In an open letter relayed furthermore by the organisation Oxfam, the group urges governments to raise taxes on millionaires and billionaires “immediately. substantially. permanently”.

The letter warns that the impact of the crisis will be felt for decades and could push almost half a billion more people into poverty.

Unlike tens of millions of people around the world, we do not have to worry about losing our jobs, our homes or our ability to support our families. We are not fighting on the frontlines of this emergency and we are much less likely to be its victims. So, please. Tax us. Tax us. Tax us. It is the right choice. It is the only choice”, they write.

The call comes a few days ahead of this weekend's meeting of EU heads of state and government on the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2021-2027 and the Covid-19 Recovery Plan for a post-pandemic Europe, as well as the meeting of G20 finance ministers.

Among the signatories are Walt Disney's heiress and American film producer Abigail Disney, British director, screenwriter and producer Richard Curtis, as well as American former managing director at Blackrock, Morris Pearl.
