08/06/2020 (Agence Europe) – The UN Security Council decided on 5 June, by unanimous vote from the 15 members - including Belgium, Estonia, France, and Germany - to extend for one year a series of authorisations allowing Member States to inspect vessels suspected of violating the arms embargo, on the high seas off the coast of Libya. Resolution 2526 (2020) under Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations, which they agreed to, will allow the EU CSDP operation, EUNAVFOR Med Irini, to continue its activities. The UN Secretary General will have to report on the implementation of the resolution within 11 months. On the same day, Greek Commodore Theodoros Mikropoulos took over as Chief of Staff for Operation Irini, replacing Italian Brigadier General Sebastiano Longo. (CG)
