Belgium’s turn to commit to take migrants from camps on Greek islands

13/05/2020 (Agence Europe)On Wednesday 13 May, the European Commission confirmed that Belgium has made a commitment to take in unaccompanied minors from camps on the Greek islands, following the example of Luxembourg, Germany, Portugal and Slovenia. Consequently, Belgium joins 10 other Member States and Switzerland in providing long-term care for at least 1,600 young migrants. It is reported that Belgium has committed to take 18 people. The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) said on Wednesday that it had signed an agreement with Greece to help relocate the unaccompanied young migrants. This is an amendment to the current operational plan for Greece. The Agency will help Member States to choose the migrants they will be taking on the basis of criteria such as language or family or cultural ties. (SP)
