13/05/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Wednesday 13 May, the European Parliament approved the regulation laying down minimum requirements for the safe reuse of urban waste water for irrigation purposes, mainly in agriculture, but also for industrial or environmental purposes. This regulation aims both to save water and to promote circular economy. It contains strict requirements for the quality of reclaimed water and its monitoring to ensure the protection of human and animal health and the environment. Member States which consider that water reuse is not appropriate in one or more of their river basin districts may take their decision by taking into account a list of four, but not all, parameters. The Regulation will be published in the Official Journal of the EU, the EU Council having already confirmed the text resulting from the interinstitutional negotiations (see EUROPE 12463/27). The rules will enter into force on the 20th day following their publication in the Official Journal and will apply three years after their entry into force. (AN)
