The spokesman for the European External Action Service, Peter Stano, welcomed on Friday 14 February the announcement of an agreement between the Kosovar and Serbian Presidents on a US-led rail and motorway link project between Pristina and Belgrade.
A similar agreement was reached, again with the help of the United States, a few weeks ago on the re-establishment of direct flights between the two capitals.
“I can only commend any movement, decision, action, which brings people on both sides closer together”, he said, adding that this was part of the steps towards normalisation of relations between the two countries.
Asked whether the Americans had participated in the agreement and the EU had not, Mr Stano said that the EU was present when it was important for both sides to be present. “There is not a competition regarding who is present” or not, added Commission spokeswoman Dana Spinant. She explained that all contribution to the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina were important.
The dialogue is currently at a standstill because of taxes imposed by Kosovo on Serbian and Bosnian products. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
