Brexit, European shipping industry urges EU to negotiate an agreement for a transitional period

11/10/2019 (Agence Europe)The European Community Shipowners’ Association (ECSA) has sent a letter to the EU Chief Negotiator for Brexit, Michel Barnier, on Friday 11 October, urging him to reach an agreement that would provide for a transition period in the negotiations with London. ECSA points out that this period would give the UK and EU partners the necessary time and clarity to prepare, while recalling that a lack of agreement would have a significant impact on the flow of trade between the parties, to the detriment of shipping lines, logistics partners, passengers and consumers. While the United Kingdom's exit from the EU, scheduled for 31 October, remains uncertain to date (see other news), a series of measures to be implemented in the event of a no-deal Brexit have already been adopted, particularly in the field of maritime transport (see EUROPE 12191/26, 12177/38).
