European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture opposes electronic identification of small ruminants

On 4 or 5 November, the European Parliament's Agricultural Committee could decide to object to a delegated act on the traceability of some livestock.

MEPs criticise the European Commission, which originally proposed the text, for wanting to force farmers to use electronic loops for those sheep and goats under 12 months old which are intended for fattening or slaughter.

Farmers currently have a derogation from the obligation to use these loops for small ruminants under 1 year of age which are destined for the internal market. However, the services of the Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety refuse to extend this derogation, in order to improve animal welfare.

The delegated act in question is the Commission's delegated regulation supplementing Regulation 2016/429 as regards the rules on establishments keeping terrestrial animals and for hatcheries, as well as the traceability of some kept terrestrial animals and hatching eggs.
