Germany's about-face on country by country reporting

16/09/2019 (Agence Europe)On Friday 13 September, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz announced on Twitter that he had agreed with the other SPD Ministers to support the proposal for country by country reporting, which would require companies to disclose certain accounting data, such as their revenues, profits or even taxes paid (see EUROPE 11530/1). The subject is completely blocked in the EU Council. The last meeting of national experts was held at the end of January (see EUROPE 12179/21) and did not allow significant progress to be made on the question of the legal basis. Germany's change of position could thus relaunch negotiations on the text. The Finnish Presidency of the Council of the EU has in any case committed itself (see EUROPE 12319/8) to trying to move the matter forward. (MF)
