On 24 September, EU ministers will discuss draft national energy/climate plans

On 24 September in Brussels, European Energy Ministers will discuss draft national energy and climate plans (see EUROPE 12282/4).

The Finnish Presidency of the EU Council has prepared an information document and questions.

On 18 June 2019, the European Commission published its assessment of the draft national energy and climate plans (NECPs) and the recommendations to Member States for their finalisation.

In particular, the Commission had identified a gap between the national ambition levels set for 2030 and the EU's 2030 targets for energy efficiency and renewable energy.

Given that further progress in decarbonisation depends crucially on achieving the Union’s 2030 energy efficiency and renewable energy targets, the Presidency considers it of utmost importance that the EU reaches its targets for 2030”, the Finnish note states.

Member States must prepare the final NECPs. The EU Council is being called upon to discuss this gap between national levels of ambition (energy efficiency/renewable energy) and the planned new governance mechanism.

In addition, Energy Ministers will discuss how Member States are seeking to achieve climate neutrality, particularly in the energy sector. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
