On Monday 16 September, the European Commission adopted an action programme for 2019 identifying new projects to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus.
With a budget of 35.4 million euros, this programme aims to stimulate the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community, in particular through the construction of infrastructure and environmental protection, and to promote the adoption of the acquis communautaire on the part of the island under Turkish Cypriot control, in particular as regards health and food safety standards.
In the field of education, support will also be provided to advance teaching, including through the establishment of science laboratories in schools. Scholarships will also be made available to enable young Turkish Cypriots to study and train in the European Union.
This Annual Action Program is implemented by the European Commission's Structural Reform Support Service.
Between 2006 and 2019, 555 million euros was allocated to the Turkish Cypriot community by the European Union to facilitate the reunification of the island.
