The European Commission calls on Portugal to comply as soon as possible with the reporting obligations on the ecological status of marine waters under the Marine Strategy framework directive (Directive 2008/56/EC) in a letter of formal notice sent to Lisbon on Thursday 6 June.
As a reminder, the Directive provides a framework for the protection of the EU's seas and oceans and ensures that their resources are managed in a sustainable way. Member States were required to review and update their assessments of the state of their marine waters and their environmental objectives by 15 October 2018, the Commission said in its press release. Portugal has not complied with this obligation, having failed to communicate any report to the Commission.
The latter has therefore decided to send a letter of formal notice to Portugal, which has 2 months to reply. (Original version in French by Pascal Hansens)
