Portugal singled out by European Commission for protection of its marine waters

The European Commission calls on Portugal to comply as soon as possible with the reporting obligations on the ecological status of marine waters under the Marine Strategy framework directive (Directive 2008/56/EC) in a letter of formal notice sent to Lisbon on Thursday 6 June.

As a reminder, the Directive provides a framework for the protection of the EU's seas and oceans and ensures that their resources are managed in a sustainable way. Member States were required to review and update...
