03/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – According to a report published on 29 April by the European Climate Foundation (EFC), the agreement for an orderly Brexit negotiated by British Prime Minister Theresa May “would need substantial changes to avoid damaging environmental rollbacks”. According to this document, even if the orderly withdrawal agreement contains a non-regression clause on the level of environmental protection, “serious questions remain about whether [British] standards would keep apace with the rest of the EU27 in future, and whether the rules would be properly and independently enforced”. In particular, the report questions London's ability to defend high environmental standards in the context of post-Brexit trade agreements. And the authors point out that European policies have helped to reduce the United Kingdom's greenhouse gas emissions by 40% since 1990. To read the report: https://bit.ly/2DLZO2d. (DG - intern)
