Member States' ambassadors to the European Union in the Political and Security Committee (PSC) believe that the International Contact Group for Venezuela, in which eight Member States participate, is the most relevant forum for dialogue with all parties and for a peaceful solution to the Venezuelan crisis.
During discussions on Thursday 2 May to take stock of the situation on the ground (see EUROPE 12246/8), Member States called for the preservation of the rights of members of the National Assembly, including its President Juan Guaidó, who is trying to overthrow the Maduro regime by cutting off popular and military support.
Not one ambassador said that the mandate of the International Contact Group should end, while the 90-day period initially envisaged to complete its work was coming to an end (see EUROPE 12190/15). The International Contact Group will meet again at technical and then ministerial level on 6 and 7 May in San José, Costa Rica.
On Monday 13 May, the Foreign Affairs Council of the EU will again discuss the Venezuelan crisis. (Original version in French by Mathieu Bion)
