On Thursday 11 April, the European Commission launched the selection process for the next European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), with Giovanni Buttarelli's mandate due to expire on 4 December 2019 (see EUROPE 11212/16).
The EDPS, who is responsible for ensuring that the rights to privacy and the protection of personal data are respected by the institutions and bodies of the European Union, will be appointed for a five-year term, renewable once and effective on 5 December 2019.
According to the vacancy notice for the post, published in the Official Journal of the European Union on Thursday, the selection criteria include, inter alia, at least 15 years' professional experience in data protection, including five years at senior management level, as well as solid experience of EU policies in this field.
Candidates will first be examined by a pre-selection committee, which must be set up by the Commission and will propose a long list of candidates. Candidates may then be invited for a further interview by the European Commission's Consultative Committee on Appointments. The Commission will then have to send a list of three names to the European Parliament and the Council of the EU, which will have to appoint the EDPS by mutual agreement.
The deadline for applications is 16 May 2019. See the vacancy notice: https://bit.ly/2GfPmQO (Original version in French by Marion Fontana)
