The European Parliament and the Council of the EU gave their approval on 3 December to the appointment of Giovanni Buttarelli and Wojciech Rafal Wiewiorowski to the posts of European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and Assistant Supervisor respectively. The two succeed Peter Hustinx and Giovanni Buttarelli. Their five-year term of office began on 4 December with the formal signature of the presidents of the Council and the Parliament. The role of the EDPS is to ensure that personal data protection standards are respected by the European institutions and to monitor that the legislation they bring forward is fully compliant with the rules and standards.
