BEUC calls for thorough evaluation of Facebook's practices, more transparency is not enough

For the European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), Facebook's commitment to ensure greater transparency in the use of its users' data is an improvement, but is not enough (see EUROPE 12232/13). The organisation has called for a thorough assessment of Facebook's practices.

Clearer terms and conditions are welcome, but do not solve the problems inherent in Facebook's business model, which is based on the massive exploitation and monetization of people's personal data, its market dominance in Europe and concerns about compliance with the GDPR regulation”.

Furthermore, “a comprehensive and coordinated assessment of Facebook's practices should be carried out from a consumer, data protection and competition law perspective by all national enforcement authorities. More transparency is not enough--a fundamental change in Facebook's practices is needed", said BEUC Deputy Executive Director Ursula Pachl. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
