As expected, the French Secretary of State for European Affairs, Nathalie Loiseau, is the head of the “Renaissance” list – the coalition of La République en Marche, Modem and members of civil society – for the European elections in France.
“This is a renewal list”, said Modem President François Bayrou at the presentation of the first thirty members of the list. Of these, only three are or have been MEPs: Pascal Canfin (2nd place), Dominique Riquet (16th) and Pascal Durand (18th).
However, the candidates are also not political novices, with almost half of them holding electoral mandates, including Senator Fabienne Keller (7th).
Former journalist Bernard Guetta (8th), navigator Catherine Chabaud (5th) and Sandro Gozi, former Italian Secretary of State for European Affairs and current President of the Union of European Federalists (22nd) are also on the list.
Asked about joining a future ALDE group in the European Parliament, Ms Loiseau said the objective was a group that proposed a “progressive, renewed and central offer”. According to her, this includes many parties that are members of the ALDE party, but not exclusively.
According to Parliament projections in February 2019, the list is expected to win around 24 seats.
In addition, Ms Loiseau announced her resignation from her position as Secretary of State, effective 27 March, after the Council of Ministers.
