12/03/2019 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 12 March, the European Parliament encouraged the Union to give greater priority to conflict prevention and mediation "within or in support of the current agreed forms and principles of negotiation". In the massive report by Soraya Post (S&D, Sweden) on strengthening the Union's capacity for conflict prevention and mediation, which they adopted by 369 votes in favour, 69 against and 199 abstentions, MEPs stress the need to allocate sufficient financial resources in the next multiannual financial framework. They also call for the establishment, under the authority of the High Representative and the chairmanship of a Union Special Envoy for Peace, of a high-level advisory committee on conflict prevention and mediation, in order to establish a comprehensive list of political mediators and experts, so that political and technical expertise is readily available.
