Several representatives of Syrian civil society called on the European Union, on Tuesday 12 March, to strengthen its action in favour of a genuine political transition in Syria that guarantees justice in the country and the security of the Syrian population, at the opening of the third Brussels conference on “supporting the future of Syria and the region” organised at the European Parliament.
The vast majority of Syrians who took the floor thus called on Member States to intensify their efforts to achieve a political transition and to ensure that persons who have committed crimes against Syrian civilians are held accountable for their actions and brought to justice.
The second demand that emerged from the interventions concerns the protection of Syrians. It is important to ensure that the political transition in Syria allows those who have left the country to return safely, participants said.
Running until 14 March, this EU event, co-chaired with the UN, aims to act as a platform for many stakeholders to dialogue, debate or simply testify.
On the basis of these exchanges, the objective is then to further mobilise the international community in favour of a lasting political solution to the Syrian crisis, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. (Original version in French by Damien Genicot - intern)
